How US Sales Tax Works

The United States has no national sales tax. Instead, 45 states and the District of Columbia charge a statewide rate, and many counties, cities and special districts add their own local rate on top. The rate you actually pay at checkout is the combined rate: state plus local. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, although some Alaskan towns charge a local one.

Adding tax: multiply the price by the combined rate. A $100 item at 8.25% costs $108.25. Removing tax: divide the receipt total by (1 + rate) to recover the pre-tax price. $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100. This reverse calculation is handy for expense reports and for checking whether a receipt charged the right rate.

Many states exempt or reduce tax on groceries, prescription drugs and clothing, and rules differ for services and digital goods. This calculator applies one rate to the whole amount, so check your state's rules for exempt items.

State base rates are current as of July 1, 2026 (source: Tax Foundation) and can change. Hawaii's rate is its General Excise Tax; California, Utah and Virginia include the mandatory local portion charged statewide. Local rates vary by address — confirm with your state revenue department.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Some Alaskan cities and boroughs still charge a local sales tax.

Which state has the highest sales tax?

California has the highest statewide rate at 7.25%. Once local taxes are added, Louisiana, Tennessee, Washington, Arkansas and Alabama have the highest average combined rates, above 9%.

How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. For example, $108.25 at 8.25% is $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100 before tax, so the tax was $8.25. Use the Remove tax mode above to do this instantly.

Do I pay sales tax on online purchases?

Usually yes. Since the 2018 Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, states can require online sellers to collect sales tax, and every state with a sales tax does.

Is shipping subject to sales tax?

It depends on the state. Some tax shipping charges, some don't, and some tax them only when the item itself is taxable. Check your state's revenue department.
