How Canadian Income Tax Works

Canadians pay income tax to two levels of government: the federal government and their province. Federal tax for 2025 runs from 15% on the first $57,375 of taxable income up to 33% above $253,414, while every province layers its own progressive brackets on top — Alberta's top rate tops out at 15%, while Quebec residents pay up to 25.75% provincially in addition to federal tax. Both levels apply a Basic Personal Amount (BPA) — a non-refundable tax credit, not a deduction — that shields your first roughly $12,700 to $21,900 of income (depending on province) from provincial tax, and $16,129 from federal tax, calculated at the lowest applicable rate.

CPP and EI are separate payroll contributions, not income tax. The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) charges 5.95% on earnings between $3,500 and the Year's Maximum Pensionable Earnings ($71,300 for 2025), plus a second CPP2 contribution of 4% on earnings between that and $81,200. Employment Insurance (EI) charges 1.64% on earnings up to $65,700. Both fund future benefits and, unlike income tax, aren't reduced by RRSP contributions.

Note: Provincial figures for Ontario, BC, Alberta and Quebec are based on recently published 2025 brackets and Basic Personal Amounts; for other provinces, use the custom rate option. This tool doesn't model provincial surtaxes (e.g. Ontario's), the Canada Employment Amount, or Quebec's distinct QPP/abatement rules — check the CRA or Revenu Québec for exact figures.
