What's specific to California

How California taxes your paycheck

  • Brackets run from 1% to 12.3%. Taxable income above $1,000,000 pays another 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax, so the top rate is 13.3%.
  • California's standard deduction is small: $5,706 single, $11,412 married or head of household. A personal exemption credit ($153 single, $306 joint) then comes off the tax.
  • State Disability Insurance (SDI) is withheld at 1.3% in 2026 on all wages. There has been no wage cap since 2024, so high earners pay SDI on their whole salary.
  • The FTB publishes indexed 2026 brackets late in the year. Until then it tells taxpayers to estimate 2026 tax with the 2025 schedules, which this page uses.

California income tax uses the FTB's 2025 rate schedules, which the FTB tells taxpayers to use for 2026 estimated tax until 2026 schedules are published. SDI is the 2026 rate.
